Ripley's Believe It or Not! To Hold Food Drive

Ripley's Believe It or Not! is launching a campaign to combat hunger in all the cities where it has Believe It or Not! Odditoriums. Ripley's Gimme Five Food Drive will take place from Sunday, November 6 through Thursday, November 10.

Here's how it works: guests who bring a donation of five non-perishable food items can get a ticket to Ripley's Believe It or Not! Branson Odditorium for just $5 (regular adult ticket price is $17.99). All the food collected will go to the Ozarks Food Harvest.

"We're in the business of 'unbelievable', and the number of families needing help putting food on the table is truly unbelievable," said Jim Pattison Jr., President of Ripley Entertainment Inc. "That's why we started this national effort to help food banks across the country."

Facts on hunger in the Ozarks:
Ozarks Food Harvest is the only food bank in southwest Missouri, serving 300 hunger relief organizations in 28 Ozarks counties.
The Food Bank reaches 20,000 individuals a week and distributes 1,000,000 pounds of food each month. Many food bank clients say their children have to skip meals because there is not enough money for food. Suggested donations include juice, soup, beans, tuna, cereal, canned fruits and vegetables, peanut butter, pasta, tomato sauce and baby food.

Kids Fishing Derby

Attention all Moms and Dads, Aunts and Uncles even Grandma and Grandpa, it's time to bring the kids for a fun-filled afternoon of family fishing! The annual Kids Fishing Derby, sponsored by the Branson Daybreakers Rotary Club, will be held on Sunday, Oct 16, at the ponds on the Don Gardner Golf Course. Register at the event at 1:00 pm for 3-6 year olds, 2:00 pm for 7-10 year olds and 3:00 pm for 11-14 year olds. Each age group will fish separately with weigh-in and prizes to follow. Limit 50 participants in each age group. There is a $2.00 entry fee for each child fishing, with proceeds going to fund Branson Daybreakers Rotary Club projects.

After joining the Marine Corps at 18, Dale Dye served in Vietnam in 1965 and 1967 through 1970 surviving 31 major combat operations. He emerged from Southeast Asia highly decorated including three Purple Hearts for wounds suffered in combat. He spent 13 years as an enlisted Marine, rising to the rank of Master Sergeant before he was chosen to attend Officer Candidate School. Appointed a Warrant Officer in 1976, he later converted his commission and was a Captain when he was sent to Beirut with the Multinational Peacekeeping Force in 1982-83. He served in a variety of assignments around the world and along the way managed to graduate with a B.A. in English from the University of Maryland.

He worked for a year at “Soldier of Fortune” Magazine when he finally decided to retire from the Marine Corps in 1984. He spent time in Central America, reporting and training troops in guerrilla warfare techniques in both El Salvador and Nicaragua before leaving the magazine in 1985 and heading for Hollywood.

Starting with the Academy Award-winning Platoon, Dye has matched his mission with Hollywood’s need to look smart. His specialty is training. By putting actors through a week or more of military-like drills—as he did for Steven Spielberg’s Saving Private Ryan and Tom Hanks’s Band of Brothers, and most recently in the new HBO maxi-series The Pacific, –he makes them convincing soldiers and better actors. He has worked on more than fifty movies and television shows. He’s also a well-known actor, and can be seen in TNT’s Falling Skies.

BRANSON, Mo. April 15 of 2012 will be the 100th anniversary of the sinking of the “unsinkable” RMS Titanic in the north Atlantic Ocean after hitting an iceberg late in the evening on April 14. Although the Titanic Museum Attractions “pay respect to and honor” the “2,208 passengers and crew members” who perished “the museums are honoring the 100 Year Anniversary of Titanic’s maiden voyage” with a series of “special events, activities, and ceremonies” leading up to April 15, 2012. One of the special events is the “Titanic Museum Attractions’ Royal Wedding Contest” honoring the honeymooning couples who were on board the Titanic.

In honor of the 12 honeymooning couples who were aboard the Titanic, the “Titanic Museum Attractions’ Royal Wedding Contest” will “give away its own ‘Royal Wedding.’” The wedding will take place on the “million-dollar Grand Staircase of the Titanic Museum Attraction,” which “is exact in every detail to the one passengers walked on board the “RMS Titanic.” Two Royal Weddings will be awarded, one for each Titanic Museum Attraction location Branson, Missouri and Pigeon Forge, Tennessee.

Couples wishing to enter the contest must complete an online form, available at www.TitanicAttraction.com, along with complete contest rules and timelines, and submit it along with a video “introducing themselves, telling about their relationship, and explaining why they should win the ‘Royal Wedding’” by November 28, 2011. Between then and December 6 the Titanic Museum Attraction will pick three finalists for each location.

Beginning December 6 the public will be able to view the videos of the finalists online and vote. The winner will be the video receiving the most votes and will announced on January 16, 2012. Beginning on January 30, 2012 the public will begin a series of separate online votes for the brides wedding gown, the wedding cake and “Royal Wedding flowers.” The date of the Titanic Museum Attraction’s Royal Wedding will be announced March 30.

Carl is suffering from late-stage Lyme Disease which has attacked many areas of his body and resulted in a heart attack, brain tumor, osteoarthritis in his joints and more. He has been unable to work for the past year and is facing many more months of rehab and surgeries, leaving him and his family in financial dire straits.

National Girls' World Series coming to Branson

The United States Sports Specialty Association (USSSA) will be holding its 2011 girls ages 9 and 10 World Series Fast Pitch Softball Championship in Branson July 18-24.

According to Branson Parks and Recreation Director Cindy Shook, this is the third straight year that the event has been held in Branson. “We are very excited to be once again be hosting this girls’ World Series Tournament,” said Shook. “Branson is such a great fit for this tournament and it has gotten larger every year”. Two years ago we had 35 teams and last year it shot to 61 teams. This year 65 teams will be making their way to Branson for this national event.”
Games will be played at the RecPlex ball fields, Stockstill Park and the Reeds Spring girls high school field. The USSSA Fast Pitch program will use a 5-game guarantee format in the World Series Tournament.
The Branson IMAX will host the team registration and Silver Dollar City will host the opening ceremony celebration the evening of July 18 at its Echo Hollow amphitheater and provide entertainment for the young athletes, coaches and their families.
“Over 4,000 people will attend the opening ceremony, and it’s an awesome sight to see,” said Shook. According to Shook, the economic impact of this World Series to the Branson business community is nearly $2 million as the teams will be in staying, eating and being entertained in Branson over the seven day period.

Branson Attraction Reaches New Heights and Speeds to Celebrate 30 Years
Branson, Missouri -- After 30 years of providing family entertainment to local residents and area visitors, The Track Family Fun Parks is ready to officially unveil its two-facility capital upgrade totaling almost three million dollars. The grand opening of the new attractions will take place on Saturday, May 21 June 4 starting at 10 AM at the Track 4 (3345 W. 76 Country Blvd.) and Track 3 (2505 W. 76 Country Blvd.) facilities. The day's festivities will include live radio remotes with KRZK 106.3 and KSPW 96.5, as well as giveaways throughout the day.

Heavy Metal High Rise at Track 4 is the latest addition to The Track’s high-rise go-kart track family. The LumberJack at Track 5 and Wild Woody at Track 3 were built in 2001 and 2002, respectively. The new track’s state of the art steel and concrete construction is more weather-friendly and offers a completely different experience than its wooden counterparts. "I liken it to a steel versus a wooden roller coaster," said Craig Wescott, Vice President/Co-Owner of The Track Family Fun Parks. "They are both exciting, but they just have a different feel from each other as you ride them." Heavy Metal High Rise is 1,200 linear feet long, and it contains over 200 tons of steel and 700 cubic yards of concrete. After spiraling up four stories, riders zoom down a thrilling, three-tiered slope back to the ground. This track offers single- and double-rider go-karts. The height requirements are 58" for drivers and 36" for passengers.

Memorial Day, originally called Decoration Day, is a day of remembrance for those who have died in our nation's service. There are many stories as to its actual beginnings, with over two dozen cities and towns laying claim to being the birthplace of Memorial Day. There is also evidence that organized women's groups in the South were decorating graves before the end of the Civil War: a hymn published in 1867, "Kneel Where Our Loves are Sleeping" by Nella L. Sweet carried the dedication "To The Ladies of the South who are Decorating the Graves of the Confederate Dead" (Source: Duke University's Historic American Sheet Music, 1850-1920). While Waterloo N.Y. was officially declared the birthplace of Memorial Day by President Lyndon Johnson in May 1966, it's difficult to prove conclusively the origins of the day. It is more likely that it had many separate beginnings; each of those towns and every planned or spontaneous gathering of people to honor the war dead in the 1860's tapped into the general human need to honor our dead, each contributed honorably to the growing movement that culminated in Gen Logan giving his official proclamation in 1868. It is not important who was the very first, what is important is that Memorial Day was established. Memorial Day is not about division. It is about reconciliation; it is about coming together to honor those who gave their all. Memorial Day was officially proclaimed on 5 May 1868 by General John Logan, national commander of the Grand Army of the Republic, in his General Order No. 11, and was first observed on 30 May 1868, when flowers were placed on the graves of Union and Confederate soldiers at Arlington National Cemetery. The first state to officially recognize the holiday was New York in 1873. By 1890 it was recognized by all of the northern states. The South refused to acknowledge the day, honoring their dead on separate days until after World War I (when the holiday changed from honoring just those who died fighting in the Civil War to honoring Americans who died fighting in any war). It is now celebrated in almost every State on the last Monday in May (passed by Congress with the National Holiday Act of 1971 (P.L. 90 - 363) to ensure a three day weekend for Federal holidays), though several southern states have an additional separate day for honoring the Confederate war dead: January 19 in Texas, April 26 in Alabama, Florida, Georgia, and Mississippi; May 10 in South Carolina; and June 3 (Jefferson Davis' birthday) in Louisiana and Tennessee.

When I was young, family vacations with my parents consisted of driving for a week from place to place in a hot stifling car. My parents had the knack of picking the hottest week of the summer to do so. In spite of that, we still had fun, managed to find interesting sites to explore and those are the memories that I still have.

Family vacations have evolved over the years. There have never been more choices, more variety and more options available for family vacations as there is today. Especially since 9/11, the focus on family and community and played a strong role in our society. The travel industry has noticed and has geared up for families. From all-inclusive vacation packages and cruises, which are equipped with kids clubs and special activities; to resorts that supply a nanny for your stay, it's never been a better time for families to travel. Still not sure? Here are just a few of the benefits of taking a family vacation:

1. The family that plays together, stays together.....

It is a time to get away from it all. Away from work, the phone calls, the kid's activities, the daily to do list. This is a great opportunity to spend time as a family and get to know each other. Go for a hike, build a sandcastle, explore a museum. There is more time to talk and spend time together without the daily distractions.

2. Teach your children well....

Travel is an excellent learning tool for kids. They can have the opportunity to learn about things first hand they may have learned in school, read about or saw on TV. Any destination can offer this learning experience whether it is a few hours drive away from you home or in Europe. Family vacations will teach children about different cultures, food, history, geography, climate, environment and so much more. Family vacations provide a whole new venue for experiences that your kids never would have had otherwise. We took a family cruise last winter, and it was my 9-year-old son's first cruise. We told him all about the ship and showed him pictures but I don't think he could quite grasp what it was really going to be like. We landed in Fort Lauderdale and as we were driving to the port, we could see our ship in the distance. He was excited but still very nonchalant. Once we got to the port and pulled up alongside the ship, he looked up and up and up at the enormous ship, his mouth dropped open and he gasped in amazement. That reaction was worth the price of the whole trip and is something I know our family will always remember.

4. Life is an adventure, especially on vacation....

Even if you are not particularly brave there are still many ways to experience the adventures that lie in every corner of our planet. It may be as simple as going to the zoo at your destination and seeing the animals that are local to that habitat or taking a jungle tour though the Amazon. There is so much to see and do, pick the adventures that appeal to your family and do them together.

5. Your kids won't be kids forever....

Doesn't seem like yesterday that the teenager that just borrowed your car, was in diapers and day-care? Most parents agree that time seems to fly by quickly and those babies are grown before you know it. There will come a time that your children will have lives of their own and sad as it may seem, spending time with Mom and Dad will not be anywhere near the top of their list. Take the time for a family vacation while they still want your company.

6. Time to kick back and relax......

Now this part is important. One of the main reasons to take a vacation is to get some rest and recharge. It is important for everyone so don't over do it. Try and schedule an active day followed by a more relaxing day. It's hard to do in some destinations where there is so much to see and do like Disney World, but trust me. The kids will be less tired and cranky and it will give you a reason to come back to the destination again!

I know this all sounds so good, it makes you want to book that trip you've been putting off doesn't it? Well, I will add in a dose of reality here and include a few negatives. There are some natural stresses to travelling. Planes get delayed, kids get cranky, families can have too much of a good thing and get on each other's nerves. Last night I watched my husband receive an award for his first feature film. Making movies is a dream he's had since he was a little kid, and of course, I couldn't help but think about the 8-year-old who would have been jumping up and down at something so long sought coming true.It got me thinking about those eight-year-olds in all of us––what they wanted, what they hoped for. Some psychologists suggest that the ages from 8-10 are a time when we are our most authentic selves, the last breath of our truest individuality before the indignities of middle school and high school set in. I like to imagine sitting down for lunch with my younger self and seeing if she would like me. She wrote stories about headstrong girls who loved horses and the library. And I like to think she'd be delighted to see her grown-up self a writer, and the proud owner of a red bicycle (with baskets!). So far, I think I've done her proud. Here's how to use your own eight-year old self as a compass for your current life:

Stop smoking. Smoking is bad. Every kid knows that. And little kids are kind of judgmental about their strict understanding of right and wrong. Don't do it. Not to put too fine a point on it, but it will make you die, and kids don't like death. (Word on the street is adults don't either.)

Follow your own fashion rules. I love the way little girls dress. They'll pair their favorite striped tights with their glittery maryjanes and a polka dot dress. They wear what they like, and their concept of "matching" is pretty loose. You don't need to start dressing like a crazy lady, but do let your personal preferences for color and shape win out over what "everyone else" is wearing.

Go outside and play. What we were doing for all those hours when adults instructed us to "go outside and play?" I was making "stew" from twigs, dirt, and honeysuckles (is it any real wonder that cooking is one of my adult passions?). Find room for the natural world in your daily routine, like sinking your fingers into rich garden dirt or just popping out for a walk during your lunch break.

Do your homework first. It was a drag to start in on our long division right after our afternoon snack, but this was an important lesson: By doing what had to be done first, we played guilt-free once the books were put away. Fast forward a few years and we were staying up all night before an exam trying to understand a semester of chemistry. But when we were young, we did a little bit every day. Whatever it is you want in your adult life, whether to keep your house tidier, paint, or have a wider circle of friends, do the "homework" every day.

Play "make believe." I know an adult couple who scratch the imagining itch by inviting friends over to read movie screenplays over wine and cheese. You can boost your imagination by something less organized and less public simply by trying out new recipes or taking a new route to work. It's just about breaking out of your day in, day out routine and thinking outside the predictable box. A kid would turn that box into a fort; maybe you should, too.

Live by your kid conscience. Kids really have an indignant sense of right and wrong; they respect the social order that keeps life humming along civilly. They stand in line, raise their hands, say please and thank you. Unless you were the school bully, your eight-year-old self wouldn't cut someone off in traffic, stiff the waitress, or cop 'tude just because you're running late. You know in cartoons how there's an angel on someone's shoulder advising what to do? If you live your life by the rules of your younger self, chances are pretty good you'll be doing the right thing, acting with dignity, honor, and politesse. Girl Scout's honor.

Do what you love. Kids know how to have fun. They live in the moment and have recreation built into their lives. They play soccer and take ballet. They get lost in books and take time to finger paint, all because it's fun and because they love it. Consult what you loved as a kid. Maybe it still resonates with you today, or maybe you need to take up the adult version. Find time for that passion, that sense of delight and play.

Believe in magic. Kids have an infectious sense of wonder at the world. They seem equally delighted by caterpillars and Santa Claus. Can you suspend your jaded seen-it-all-on-a-reality-show attitude to marvel at a bouquet of fragrant roses or the sense that maybe, just maybe, there's something grand at work in the universe? People change the world; when you were a kid, you wanted to be part of that. Summon that eight-year-old scrappy self-confidence and remember that you wanted to be a part of making the world just a little bit of a better place.

He had his own TV variety show from 1962–71 in which he performed with Michael Jackson, Bobby Darin, Ray Charles, Elton John, Ella Fitzgerald, Simon & Garfunkel, Mama Cass, Shirley Bassey, Bing Crosby, The Osmonds, Dusty Springfield, Perry Como, Frank Sinatra, Aretha Franklin, The Carpenters, Jack Benny, Bette Davis, Dean Martin, Bob Hope, Ronald Reagan and many other superstars.

Williams was born in Iowa, the son of Jay Emerson and Florence (née Finley) Williams. He first performed in a children's choir at the local Presbyterian Church. Williams and his three older brothers Bob, Don, and Dick formed the Williams Brothers quartet in late 1938, and they performed on radio in the Midwest, first at WHO in Des Moines, Iowa, and later at WLS in Chicago and WLW in Cincinnati. Williams graduated from Western Hills High School in Cincinnati and his brother was engaged to Gene Ingram's car-pool partner, Peggy. I'm a lover of old remedies - particularly when they work!

ONIONS

In 1919 when the 'flu killed 40 million people there was this Doctor that visited the many farmers to see if he could help them combat the flu. Many of the farmers and their family had contracted it and many died.
The doctor came upon one farmer and, to his surprise, everyone was very healthy.
When the doctor asked what the farmer was doing that was different, the wife replied that she had placed an unpeeled onion in a dish in the rooms of the home, (probably only two rooms back then).
The doctor couldn't believe it and asked if he could have one of the onions.
She gave him one which he placed under the microscope he found the 'flu virus in the onion. It had obviously absorbed the bacteria, thereby keeping the family healthy.

Now, I heard this story from my hairdresser in AZ. She said that several years ago many of her employees were coming down with the flu and so were many of her customers.
The next year she placed several bowls with onions around in her shop and, to her surprise, none of her staff got sick. It must work.... and no, she is not in the onion business.

The moral of the story is, buy some onions and place them in bowls around your home. If you work at a desk, place one or two in your office or under your desk or even on top somewhere. Try it and see what happens. We did it last year and we never got the flu. If this helps you and your loved ones from getting sick, all the better. If you do get the flu, it just might be a mild case.

I sent it to a friend in Oregon who regularly contributes material to me on health issues and she replied with this most interesting experience about onions:

Weldon, thanks for the reminder. I don't know about the farmer’s story, but I do know that I contacted pneumonia and needless to say I was very ill. I came across an article that said to cut both ends off an onion, put one end on a fork and then place the forked end into an empty jar...placing the jar next to the sick patient at night. It said the onion would be black in the morning from the germs.

Sure enough it happened just like that, the onion was a mess and I began to feel better.

Another thing I read in the article was that onions and garlic placed around the room saved many from the black plague years ago. They have powerful antibacterial and antiseptic properties.

This is the other note.

LEFT OVER ONIONS ARE POISONOUS

I have used an onion which has been left in the fridge, and sometimes I don't use a whole one at one time, so save the other half for later.

Now with this info, I have changed my mind. I will buy smaller onions in the future.

I had the wonderful privilege of touring Mullins Food Products, makers of mayonnaise. Mullins is huge, and is owned by 11 brothers and sisters in the Mullins family. My friend, Jeanne, is the CEO.

Questions about food poisoning came up, and I wanted to share what I learned from a chemist.

The guy who gave us our tour is named Ed - he's one of the brothers.

Ed is a chemistry expert and is involved in developing most of the sauce formula. He's even developed sauce formula for McDonald's. Keep in mind that Ed is a food chemistry whiz. During the tour, someone asked if we really needed to worry about mayonnaise. People are always worried that mayonnaise will spoil. Ed's answer will surprise you. He said that all commercially-made Mayo is completely safe. "It doesn't even have to be refrigerated. No harm in refrigerating it, but it's not really necessary." He explained that the pH in mayonnaise is set at a point that bacteria could not survive in that environment.

He then talked about the quaint essential picnic, with the bowl of potato salad sitting on the table and how everyone blames the mayonnaise when someone gets sick.

Ed says that when food poisoning is reported, the first thing the officials look for is when the ‘victim’ last ate ONIONS and where those onions came from (in the potato salad?). Ed says it's not the mayonnaise (as long as it's not homemade Mayo) that spoils in the outdoors. It's probably the onions, and if not the onions, it's the POTATOES.

He explained, onions are a huge magnet for bacteria, especially uncooked onions. You should never plan to keep a portion of a sliced onion.. It’s not even safe if you put it in a zip-lock bag and put it in your refrigerator.
It's already contaminated enough just by being cut open and out for a bit, that it can be a danger to you. (And doubly watch out for those onions you put in your hotdogs at the baseball park!)

Ed says if you take the leftover onion and cook it like crazy you'll probably be okay, but if you slice that leftover onion and put on your sandwich, you're asking for trouble. Both the onions and the moist potato in a potato salad will attract and grow bacteria faster than any commercial mayonnaise will even begin to break down.

For some reason, I see a lot of credibility coming from a chemist and a company that produces millions of pounds of mayonnaise every ear.

We spent 10 nights, enjoyed the comfy bed & accomodations. Free continental breakfast was very good, as were the delicious cookies baked fresh every afternoon. We played miniature golf (free) several times and even enjoyed it at night!! Lisa checked us in and was most genial during our stay. Chris and Kyle did their best to help in any way they could. Chris even got us the name of a tow service, dealership & car rental agency when friends had car trouble. If that is not going beyond the call of duty, then I don't what is!!!!! Claudette Bolin was very nice when she came to service our room on several occasions. She is a great example of the entire staff making "you feel right at home"!!! Definitely will come back and recommend to all our friends!

It's New Year's resolution time ... and while sometimes vague notions like "lose weight" or "get more exercise" are just fine, other times nothing short of transformation is required. If you're looking to be a master of at least one aspect of your life at this time next year, read on for ideas.

1) Take up a sport: Not only will this help with the perennial lose-weight-and-exercise resolution, this might just turn you into the kind of person who thinks of herself as an athlete. Get your

2) Finances in order. It's not a fun topic, but with the economy starting to show signs of life, it's even more important to know where your money is going and how to hold on to more of it.

3) Embrace your vices. Perfect people are boring ... and as it turns out, some of the most common, and most enjoyable, vices are actually good for you in moderation. Dark chocolate, a daily adult beverage, and your favorite caffeine buzz all have health benefits.

4) Give yourself the giggles. A good laugh when you are stressed or sad can instantly improve your mood; there's a reason people who see pretty disturbing things on a daily basis, like cops, firefighters, and journalists, tend to have darkly hilarious senses of humor.

5) Find some you time with a hobby. With busy family lives, things can feel like an endless grind of "work, commute, soccer practice, dinner, help with homework, bedtime (theirs), TV/cleaning/bedtime (yours) ... lather, rinse, repeat." Carve out an hour here and there for something you enjoy doing.

6) Get some rest. Easier said than done, of course. If something is keeping you from getting a good night's sleep ... say, a snoring partner, a too loud sleeping environment, or just plain insomnia, look into fixing the problem. You'll think more clearly, have more energy, and even look younger.

7) Start working more healthy foods into your diet. Keep little baggies of heart-healthy nuts in your purse and desk to avoid vending machine temptation, or buy, wash, and cut up veggies and fruit on the weekend so they're ready to go when you need them. You'll enjoy better skin, teeth, and hair, a healthier digestive system, and reduce disease-causing inflammation.

8) Start planning your meals. Spending an hour plotting things out once per week can keep more money in your pocket, keep you from wasting food, and save you a ton of time and irritation

9) Get yourself pampered and prettified with a massage, new haircut, or facial. It's not a health issue, per se, but it can give you a better outlook on life.

10) Manage your moods. Untreated, depression and bipolar disorder can cause a whole host of health problems, and quite frankly, life is just too short to live miserably.

11) Learn to think critically. We're all bombarded with information every day, and most of us have a tendency to only believe that which reflects our biases

Unless you're talking about red wine or aged cheese, getting older is usually fraught with negative implications. But before you get down about getting older, think about it -- there are lots of things that improve with age.

* Wisdom: Sure, it's a little fortune cookie-ish, but consider this: You can acquire knowledge from a book, but only by living can you acquire wisdom.

* Life stories: The longer you live, the more stories you have and the richer they become.

* Emotional stability: Research shows that people get less neurotic as they get older.

* Body image: You finally start appreciating the body you have.

Garnish:
Whipped cream
Candy canes
Directions
Stir together the whipping cream, milk, vanilla, and white chocolate chips in a slow cooker.
Cover and cook on low for 2 to 2 1/2 hours, stirring occasionally, until mixture is hot and chocolate chips are melted. Stir again before serving. Garnish with whipped cream and candy canes, as desired.

Holiday films are an important American pastime. For the best movies one must include all of the important ingredients, namely two cups of heart, a dash of fantastical whimsy and a good ole spoonful of yuletide rejuvenation, in order for a traditional holiday film to work. With that in mind, we here at 1st Inn Branson decided to compile a “best of” list – of sorts. Included within are personal favorites of the staff, or the films we all grew up watching during those festive afternoons when school was canceled due to winter storms, or during Thanksgiving or Christmas break. At their best, these films represent a merry tradition, one honored in most American households – these are the films we believe soundly capture the spirit of the holidays. A time and place when we believed Santa and his reindeer could fly; and that wishes could come true.

A Christmas Story (1983)
Say it with me: “I want an official Red Ryder carbine-action 200-shot range model air rifle with a compass in the stock, and this thing which tells time.” The quintessential Christmas movie if there ever was one, A Christmas Story remains a proverbial favorite in many a holiday household. TNT runs A Christmas Story 24/7 on Christmas day, and my family watches it all day long – if you haven’t discovered this gem yet, I urge you to take the time to do so as soon as possible. Just make sure you watch it twice.

It’s a Wonderful Life (1946)
You can’t go through the holidays without experiencing George Bailey’s unexpected, even bizarre, holiday awakening. James Stewart plays Bailey, a down-on-his-luck denizen of small town Bedford Falls, a place he longs to escape, yet can’t quite get away from. That’s because, despite many an opportunity to leave, incidents ultimately force his hand to stay and save the town from the spider-like cruelty of evil business tycoon Mr. Potter (Lionel Barrymore). One Christmas Eve, circumstances prompt Bailey to attempt suicide, wishing that he had never been born. Much to his surprise, a happy-go-lucky angel (Henry Travers) arrives and grants Bailey’s wish, allowing him to see a world in which he never existed. This experience opens Bailey’s eyes and heart as he discovers the true value of life, and the importance and ultimately rewarding qualities of friendship.

The Muppet Christmas Carol (1992)
A holiday list must always include at least one adaptation of Charles Dickens’ immortal Christmas classic. Of all the big screen versions to grace the silver screen, none has been quite as charming as the Muppets’ take, featuring Michael Caine as Scrooge, and Kermit the Frog as his lowly assistant Bob Cratchit. Some may balk, but Brian Henson’s adaptation remains the most accessible to mainstream audiences (especially children), one filled with wonderful sights and sounds, and memorable songs.

Planes, Trains and Automobiles (1987)
I love this movie. Steve Martin and John Candy are brilliant as two travelers attempting to reach their homes for Thanksgiving. Predictably, chaos ensures a less than merry holiday for the pair. It doesn’t help that Candy plays a hapless buffoon (he sells shower curtain rings), one whose personality significantly contrasts against Martin’s uptight businessman. The results of their misadventures, including the complete annihilation of their car, an awkward hotel experience (“Those aren’t pillows!”), and a catastrophic freeway mishap involving semi-trucks and Candy’s brief transformation into Satan himself, provides the basis for the comedy.

National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation (1989)
What’s Christmas without the Griswold? Chevy Chase is in fine form as the ever-relatable Clark Griswold, this time forced to spend the holidays with his in-laws. Chase does some of his finest work, but “Best in Show” belongs to Randy Quaid’s Cousin Eddie, a horrific redneck concoction if there ever was one.

The Polar Express (2004)
The Polar Express remains a holiday favorite – primarily because, as one character in the film states: “It’s just so Christmas-y.” Indeed, Zemeckis outdoes himself here, adapting the equally gorgeous Chris Van Allsburg children’s book of the same name to amazing, sometimes stunning results. Tom Hanks (with the help of mo-cap technology) plays just about everybody in the film (even the main “Hero Boy”), but his presence never feels excessive; in fact, quite the opposite. His portrayal of Santa remains the film’s high point; a masterfully executed performance that perfectly embodies the spirit of St. Nick.

Home Alone (1990)
Another slapstick farce – you might say the one that started it all – Chris Columbus’ original Home Alone has heart, big laughs, and a yuletide John Williams score consistently driving it home. The oft-remembered sequence involving a pair of bumbling robbers (Joe Pesci and Daniel Stern) provides solid laughs, but it’s the build-up to that moment in which little Kevin McCallister (Macaulay Culkin), accidentally left behind by his family during the holiday rush, must fend for himself over the holidays, that catapults Home Alone into the echelon of near-classic status. Kevin undergoes a transformation of sorts: he learns to look past his fears and love the creepy neighbor (Roberts Blossom), wash dishes, and buy groceries at the local supermarket (alone!); he even watches Johnny Carson. Kevin’s adventure begins and ends long before the goofy slapstick comes into play.

Elf (2003)
Will Ferrell sings and dances his way through Jon Favreau’s goofy, even rambunctious comedy, as sugar-loving elf Buddy, who flees his North Pole sanctuary (where, at 6’3, he towers over the other elves) in an attempt to bond with his New York-based father (a very bored James Caan). Along the way he meets Jovie (Zooey Deschanel, lovely as ever), a jaded, yet quirky store employee with whom he instantly falls in love. The plot revolves around Buddy’s endeavors to save his dad from Santa’s naughty list, whilst integrating into a new, cynical society – one that frowns upon the good will carried at all times on Buddy’s sprightly shoulders.

Miracle on 34th Street (1947)
Another holiday favorite, Miracle on 34th Street stars the endearing Maureen O’Hara alongside a very young Natalie Wood, and Oscar-winner Edmund Gwenn, who won the award for his charming portrayal of Kris Kringle. The film follows the genial St. Nick and his dealings with Christmas outside the North Pole, where he encounters cynicism and disbelief. As one might expect, Kringle performs inspiring miracles – he installs good faith between feuding store owners (namely the heads of Macy’s and Gimbels), secures a romantic relationship between O’Hara’s feisty event director Doris Walker and her attorney/neighbor Fred Gailey (John Payne), and even has time to endure a court trial in an effort to prove himself the real Santa Clause.

Christmas decorations
Think of what you love about Christmas. Is it new fallen snow that takes your breath away? Is it the holiday lights in all colors or the elegant, funny, or tacky Christmas decorations that adorn your neighborhood? Maybe it's the smell of a real tree or the thoughts of new recipes you will create to celebrate the season. Really think about what it is that you truly love about Christmas and bring it to life in your mind.

Donate with a smile
The next time you're out Christmas shopping; look into the eyes of the Salvation Army bell ringer when you put money in the kettle. Wish him or her a Merry Christmas with a smile.

Silent Night
At some point when you're all alone in your day, put on your favorite Christmas music. It may be one song, or a whole CD. Play it, sing it, revel in it. Silent Night is particularly inspiring when you need to try to hold onto, or revive, your Christmas spirit.

Take a break from the news.

Newspapers and tv news shows are not exactly inspiring when economic times are tough, bad weather causes accidents to happen, and emotions are riding high during the holiday season.

Donate food or warm clothing to your local homeless shelter or food cupboard. Hand your items to a real person, say Merry Christmas, and take note of how it feels to give from your heart to people who likely don't have nearly as much as you do.
